Is BMW Going Fully Electric? Here’s What You Need to Know

March 18th, 2025 by

BMW is making a major shift toward an electric future, but is the brand going fully electric? BMW is not abandoning internal combustion engines entirely, however the company is rapidly expanding its lineup of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and has set ambitious targets for electrification.

BMW’s Electrification Strategy

BMW has committed to reducing emissions and achieving CO₂ reduction targets through electrification. By 2030, at least 50% of BMW’s global sales will be fully electric vehicles. To accelerate this transition, BMW is launching a new wave of EVs under the Neue Klasse platform.

Neue Klasse: A New Era for BMW EVs

In 2025, BMW will introduce the Neue Klasse, a dedicated EV architecture that will redefine the brand’s approach to electric mobility. Neue Klasse vehicles will feature:

  • Advanced software and IT architecture for a seamless digital experience
  • Next-generation electric drivetrains and batteries for improved efficiency and range
  • A strong focus on sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint of production and materials

BMW’s Factory Transformation

BMW’s commitment to electrification extends beyond just vehicle production. The plant in Munich will transition to producing only electric vehicles by 2027, making it a key hub for the Neue Klasse lineup.

MINI & Rolls-Royce: A Fully Electric Future

While BMW itself is moving toward majority electric sales, its sub-brands MINI and Rolls-Royce will go fully electric by the early 2030s. This aligns with BMW Group’s long-term goal of shifting to a more sustainable, emissions-free lineup.

Current & Future Electric BMW Models

BMW already offers a growing selection of electric vehicles, including:

  • BMW i4 – An all-electric Gran Coupe
  • BMW i5 – A luxury electric sedan
  • BMW iX – A high-performance electric SUV
  • BMW i7 – A flagship luxury electric sedan

In addition to BEVs, BMW is investing in hydrogen technology, with the first hydrogen-powered production model set to launch in 2028.

Conclusion: Is BMW Going Fully Electric?

BMW is not going 100% electric just yet, but the company is making significant strides toward electrification. With Neue Klasse leading the way, a 50% BEV sales target by 2030, and MINI and Rolls-Royce going fully electric, BMW is embracing an electric future while still exploring alternative technologies like hydrogen. Whether you’re looking for an EV today or curious about what’s next, BMW is undoubtedly shaping the future of luxury electric mobility.
